Yara Shahidi Makes a Political Statement Without Saying a Word

Yara Shahidi Makes a Political Statement Without Saying a Word

Yara Shahidi definitely isn’t shy about using her platform to speak out for what’s right — but sometimes she lets her clothing do the talking.

“Word @melodyehsani #DefendDACA Spread the message follow #melodyehsani for the gear,” she posted to Instagram this a.m. (September 6) with a selfie of a political tee.

“The power of the people is greater than the people in power,” Yara‘s white tee reads, in small black cursive letters. It’s an understated yet bold way to make a statement about resisting the current administration.

Yara isn’t the only young celeb defending DACA: Lauren Jauregui, Rowan Blanchard, and The Fosters cast have all been outspoken against the measure.

Yara Shahidi Loves That Her 'black-ish' Character Zoey Is Uncertain

Yara Shahidi Loves That Her 'black-ish' Character Zoey Is Uncertain

Yara Shahidi isn’t mad that Zoey Johnson isn’t perfect — in fact, that’s one of the things that she loves about her most.

In a new interview, the black-ish actress opened up about Zoey’s uncertainty of the world and how it speaks true to life.

“I think it’s really important to show that Zoey’s unsure of herself,’ she shared. “There’s also moments she’s dealing with society’s messages of what she thinks she should do, what people tell her she should do and how she should be.”

Yara adds, “When you watch her go through that, we’re all hoping to handle that in nuanced ways, but to see her struggle with indecision and see her results, good, bad or indifferent, she made a choice and this is what happens what she makes decisions for herself.”

“I think it’s really important because so many times we give messages that we’re supposed to be sure of ourselves and it can be even more stigmatizing.”

Yara Shahidi Opens Up About the Importance of Diversity On-Screen

Yara Shahidi Opens Up About the Importance of Diversity On-Screen

Yara Shahidi is not one to be silent about issues that are important to her. Her activism and her platform are very much intertwined, and she frequently speaks out about injustices — from white supremacy in Charlottesville to her political beliefs.

Now, the 17-year-old grown-ish actress is speaking out about diversity on-screen and how she came to be so entrenched in activism at such a young age.

“When we talk about diversity on screen we’re not just talking about color; we’re talking about gender identity, fluidity, and sexual identity,” she writes in an essay for i-D. “As a TV show, black-ish has created a national dialogue about social issues, whether it’s the episode in which we’re talking about police brutality, or when we talk about the complexity of being biracial.”

Yara also explains how she came to be so outspoken about issues that matter to her.

“I’m really into history and understanding past political movements, learning about those people who’ve made my literal existence possible, who have paved the way for me to thrive within the world,” she continues. “It wasn’t by accident that I am living here and living freely.”

While she may not be satisfied with what is going on in the world right now, Yara has a lot of hope for the future.

“What we’re about to unleash is the Kraken — my generation, Gen Z! So many young people are about to be of voting age, and now it’s time to prepare each and every one of us to understand not only how to vote, but the nuances of voting.”

Her voice is so important, and we’re so glad she is using it to inform and encourage her fans.
