Lili Reinhart Reveals There's a Reason Betty Isn't Wearing Her Ponytail So High on 'Riverdale'

Lili Reinhart Reveals There's a Reason Betty Isn't Wearing Her Ponytail So High on 'Riverdale'

Lili Reinhart‘s Betty Cooper has gone through hell and back again on Riverdale so far this season.

The actress chatted with Bustle about the psychological effects that doing Black Hood’s bidding is having on Betty — and it’s not good.

“It brought me closer to Betty; it made me feel like I got to know her better on a personal level,” she shared. “It wasn’t Betty’s interaction with anyone else, it was just focusing on her and all the different shades and sides of her and her darkness. It made me feel a lot closer to the character that I play, which is an opportunity that I don’t think people get to have.”

Working with Black Hood to protect herself and her friends has also taken a toll on Betty’s look. Did anyone notice how her ponytail isn’t as high and the dark circles under her eyes?

“I wanted to show Betty’s emotional state through her appearance. I remember reading episode 5 and calling down and saying in the last scene when she has broken things off with everyone, I want to be in a pale sweater and I want to look completely washed out, I want to have barely any makeup on. I want to look like a hollow person,” Lili says.

“I wanted her to look hollow because she is at the end, because she has no one,” she adds. “The Black Hood has completely ripped apart everything that she thought about who she was and made her rethink who she was.”

Lili continues, “My hair changes: at first she tries to put on a facade like things are OK then progressively throughout the episode the hair comes down, it is in a low pony, then my makeup starts to dissipate as well, and added some dark under eye circles to help give that hollow look.”

KJ Apa Heard The Craziest 'Riverdale' Black Hood Theory Yet

KJ Apa Heard The Craziest 'Riverdale' Black Hood Theory Yet

KJ Apa and Camila Mendes huddle together under an umbrella while filming new scenes for Riverdale this week on set in Vancouver, Canada.

The on-screen couple bundled up in large puffer jackets and hid from the rain outside under a few huge umbrellas.

Speaking with Nerdist recently, KJ confessed that he heard possibly the craziest theory about who Black Hood actually is on the show.

“I saw a good one that Vegas was actually the Black Hood, and that was pretty funny,” he shared. “I saw that on Twitter somewhere.”

If you don’t know, Vegas is actually the Andrews’ family dog!

KJ added about the other theories out there, “I did see some pretty crazy theories, but none of them have been right so far that I’ve seen.”

'Riverdale' Showrunner Talks About The Aftermath of Cheryl's Assault

'Riverdale' Showrunner Talks About The Aftermath of Cheryl's Assault

While Riverdale isn’t set in a particular era, the show took on a timely subject in sexual assault.

Showrunner Roberto Aguire Sacasa opened up to Variety about the storyline and how the show is going to handle the consequences for Nick St. Clair and touch on Cheryl’s state of mind.

“No one loves these characters more than I do — no one treasures them more than I do. So I think we try to handle things with care, but they are teenagers, and teenagers do bad things,” Roberto explained on why they chose to take on the touchy subject manner.

“We try to not do it for shock and salacious reasons,” he adds. “We try to make sure it comes out of an emotionally true place for the character, that it’s earned, and that we follow through on all of these things.”

For Cheryl and Nick, this won’t just be a one and done episode, it’s going to go on for the whole season.

“We thought, ‘Wow, this is actually a huge, deep story that can continue for not just Cheryl but Veronica, their parents, and Archie.’ So far, it’s something we’ve been tracking through the rest of the season.”

Riverdale airs Wednesdays on The CW.

Lili Reinhart Says Fans Shouldn't Be Too Worried About Betty & Veronica's Relationship on 'Riverdale'

Lili Reinhart Says Fans Shouldn't Be Too Worried About Betty & Veronica's Relationship on 'Riverdale'

Lili Reinhart‘s Betty went through a roller coaster of emotions on last night’s Riverdale.

The actress opened up to multiple outlets about what’s ahead for Betty, Bughead and Beronica.

“It was an intimidating episode for me because of how emotional it was,” Lili shared with Elle magazine. “It definitely was one of my hardest episodes, having to get all my emotions out there. It was intense—and a lot of crying—for that one, and I kind of put myself in deep, dark places to see all of these dark shades of Betty.”

It got especially dark for Lili “when she has to sever her ties with Veronica and Jughead — it’s devastating to watch as an audience member because you know that she’s not doing it to hurt them or on purpose. She’s doing it because she’s being forced against her will.”

We’re pulling for Bughead to come out on the other side stronger, just like we know Betty and Veronica will be doing as well.

“I wouldn’t worry too much about Betty and Veronica,” Lili assures fans. “I think it may take some time to ease back in, but when your best friend is your best friend, you fight and get over it because you love each other.”

But, speaking of Bughead…Lili does hope that Betty gets a chance to explain herself to Jughead after all of this is over…hopefully, it will be over one day.

“And to reconcile with him,” she adds. “But with the Black Hood still being a present figure in her life, it’s hard to imagine that her relationship with anyone can continue, or go back to the way it was.”

Madelaine Petsch Shares Important PSA Following 'Riverdale's Rape Scene

Madelaine Petsch Shares Important PSA Following 'Riverdale's Rape Scene

Riverdale took on the heavy topic of rape and consent this week on the show.

Nick St. Clair almost date raped Cheryl Blossom in last night’s episode before Veronica, Josie, Valerie and Melody shut that down and beat him up — and it only fired Madelaine Petsch to bring even more light to these issues with a PSA.

“[When I was] reading it, I felt like it was just another thing for Cheryl to deal with, and this is a huge thing,” Madelaine stresses to ET. “It makes sense for us to be bringing these [issues] to light and I think it’s very rare for TV shows to be doing that — especially ones that are more geared towards younger fans.”

She adds, “I think it’s important to kind of let them let [Riverdale's young audience] know what’s going on in the world and all that kinds of stuff, but at the same time, it’s just hard.

Cole Sprouse Opens Up About Betty & Jughead's Breakup on 'Riverdale'

Cole Sprouse Opens Up About Betty & Jughead's Breakup on 'Riverdale'

The thing we never wanted to happen on Riverdale happened — and Bughead’s breakup is breaking our hearts!

Cole Sprouse spoke with Collider after the episode last night, where we saw Archie break up with Jughead for Betty, as she was being threatened by Black Hood to do it.

It was a moment Jughead maybe saw coming ahead of time, too.

“There’s that one line in it, too, that he goes, ‘No, you guys haven’t been good’ and he’s trying to lie to himself and he goes, ‘No, I saw her earlier!’ But he knows he’s on the Southside now, and he knows he’s been away from everyone,” Cole says.

He adds, “I think Archie is also Jughead’s weakness when it comes to Betty, because they were kind of the three amigos when they were young, but Betty had always favored Archie and it’s something that will definitely see prevalence later on in the season, and just how much of a friendship Betty and Jughead had, even though it was just the three of them when they were younger or if Jughead felt more like a third wheel.”

“So Archie coming to deliver the bad news is not only a slap from Betty, but really a slap from Archie too, which I think is something we explore a lot later.”

While we don’t know when or even if Bughead will reunite, one thing that Cole says is that Jughead will regret not being there for Betty as she’s being forced into these bad situations by Black Hood.

“Definitely,” he says without a beat about his Jughead’s regrets. “The first half of this season for Jughead is like establishing the world that is the Southside, with the inevitable kind of civil war between the North and the South, in which Jughead’s narrative becomes a lot more prevalent, in the same way from the first season.”

He adds, “He’s kind of stretched as thin as possible right now…I think he’ll end up regretting quite a bit that he wasn’t around for Betty, but I also don’t think Jughead thinks Betty can’t take care of herself, which I think is important.”
