Debby Ryan Says Right Now is a 'Really Cool Time' For Women in the Film Industry

Debby Ryan Says Right Now is a 'Really Cool Time' For Women in the Film Industry

Many female celebrities have spoken out about the unrelenting sexism and gender pay gap in Hollywood, from Chloe Grace Moretz, who advocates for equal pay, to Jennifer Lawrence.

Still, even with the difficulties that face women, Debby Ryan is trying to focus on the positive aspects to being a modern-day actress.

“It’s a really cool time in the industry to be a woman,” the 24-year-old Insatiable actress told Rolling Stone of her experiences, “It’s really cool to [read a script] and not just be someone’s girlfriend or daughter.”

She also spoke about transitioning from her Disney years, and how finding more adult roles gave her a “real fresh start.”

“The best part in the years since we ended [Jessie] has been being able to walk through a couple doors that have been open, and then bang down some that were closed because people saw me with mouse ears. I got a real fresh start. Being a big deal in one specific world still does give you a bit of anonymity throughout the rest of the industry.”

We’re glad that she doesn’t feel her past roles are holding her back, and we can’t wait to see what projects she does next!

Summer Hairspiration: 7 Crazy Colors Your Fave Celebs Would Endorse

Summer will be in full swing soon, and while many respond to the sweltering weather by chopping their hair, we have another proposition for you (inspired by celebs like Dove Cameron and Bella Thorne): dye it!

We don’t mean dye it blonder. From subtle rose golds to blinding turquoises, the unnatural-color trend is thriving, and celebs are helping it along by dying their hair every color under the sun (or, more accurately, the rainbow.)

We are taking inspiration from your favorite stars with every different hue imaginable to bring you your summer hair possibilities.

Enjoy!! (But if you’re going to dye it at home, make sure you have an adult to help you!)

Ashley also reveals that the two have never worked together before, but are just “actual real friends.” That’s great and everything guys, but it is HIGH TIME that you perform together now that we know how beautifully your voices mesh!

The most iconic Disney Channel Original movie of all time is Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century (don’t @ us), and it looks like actress Debby Ryan is in complete agreement.

The 24-year-old Insatiable star tweeted out the world’s most relatable preference this afternoon, at least to everyone born in the ’90s who watched Disney Channel.

“Favourite artist? Protozoa,” Debby tweeted, “Favourite song? Supernova Girl.”

She is referring, of course, to Zenon. Proto Zoa is the heart-stoppingly gorgeous musician who played on Zenon’s Earth-orbiting station, and “Supernova Girl” is — you know.

One user said it best, responding to Debby‘s tweet by quoting the song: “ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM, MAKE YOUR HEART GO BOOM BOOM BOOM, MY SUPERNOVA GIRL.”

We can’t handle the nostalgia! Excuse us, we’re going back to the early 2000s and we’re never coming back.

“I need this show because I put in it my heart and it stuck there,” she wrote on Instagram. “We need this show because it’s important to tell human stories right now. It’s important to laugh and it’s important to relate and it’s important to be uncomfortable and it’s most important to learn, and then love.”

Debby Ryan Opens Up About Mental Illness in Inspiring New Video

Debby Ryan is getting real with fans for Mental Health Month.

The 24-year-old actress filmed a personal video for Tumblr’s “Post It Forward” feature in which she talks about her own experiences with depression, anxiety, and OCD.

“I wanted to share a couple things that I have figured out or am leading into within dealing with how my mind makes things really, really difficult for me sometimes,” Debby says. “As of right now, depression and anxiety are kind of opposite sides of the same coin. And there are days that feeling daunted by the world and being intimidated by getting out of bed, and just being daunted to be alive – that kind of thing can be genuinely tricky and confusing.”

“I know for me, within dealing with OCD, locking the same door over and over, and having a fear that if you don’t handle one thing, or do one thing, that something terrible can happen,” Debby continues. “Knowing with your mind that you’ve turned off the lights or pushed clear on the microwave five times, and knowing with your mind that it is okay and not being able to have that peace of mind and satisfaction until you’ve actually gone and done these sort of rituals… it can feel so cyclical and daunting.”

She also says, “Something I encourage you to do is make small goals. Take them one step at a time, write them down on a to-do list if you have to, give yourself the satisfaction of crossing them off.”
